I joined CrossFit in the same manner I run races—on a whim. After six months in Afghanistan, wondering why my endurance and strength training yielded lackluster results, I visited CFMO on a friend’s suggestion. Humbled by “Kelly,” disgraced by a meager bench press, and unable to do a “proper” pushup, I felt a challenge was in order—at least to piece together my shattered dignity. And so it began.

Since May 2011, I’ve set personal records in every running distance tackled; I’ve improved my fitness capabilities across a broad spectrum; and I’ve impressed the husband with my wicked tire-flipping skills (okay, maybe just mildly amused… ). Overall, the experience has been fantastic, and I’m ecstastic to help other realize their potential. So, bring your game face; I’ll bring the motivation.

After college and semi-pro soccer ended I cut my long hair really short and whined that I’d never need a ponytail again. I was a bit lost! I tried the running thing for a while, but it just felt so lonely. I definitely lacked the motivation I had when I was training and playing. While coaching women’s soccer at the University of Maryland, I met a guy, who now happens to be an F-15E pilot for the USAF and my husband, that introduced me to the idea of CrossFit. We just did these crazy workouts that made people look at us funny in the gym on campus, but it was way more fun than running alone. Finally, when I moved to Charleston, SC I got my first real taste of going to a CrossFit box. It was humbling to say the least! That was in December of 2011. About a month later I moved to the area and
have been getting my butt kicked by Mike and CFG/CFMO crew ever since.
CrossFit is simply the best thing in the world. Not only are you able to push yourself physically and mentally further than you’ve ever gone (almost daily it feels like), but you also do it with some of the best people around. It truly feels like a team sport that makes YOU better. You’re going to love it!!

Ben Johnson

I’m Ben Johnson. I’m 26 years old. I was born in New Mexico in 1986, which makes  me a super bad ass. I once almost got into a fight. The last time I cried was  never. Also, I never wore diapers as a baby. I was potty trained at  birth. I have been Crossfitting for a little over a year. Before that, I competed in endurance races, and have completed running races up to 50 miles,  and have completed an ironman triathlon. I was a specialized endurance athlete,  meaning I only trained and competed in endurance events with little strength  training, I realized, after joining Crossfit, just how weak and out of shape I  was. I was instantly hooked. Since I began Crossfitting, I have seen my  strength, flexibility, power and endurance sky rocket. My times have improved,  along with my recovery time. I have seen incredible changes through Crossfit,  and would never return to how I used to train. Crossfit also has the benefit of  being an incredible community. I have built some great relationships with folks  out at the gym, and consider them very close friends. My improvements in my  fitness level and the community I’ve found would never have happened without Crossfit.

It all started on a warm, humid night around 10:00pm with Chris Eaton. The workout involved 300m run, power cleans, and burpee box jumps. Every thing I knew about fitness changed that night, and everything about my life changed that night.

Ever since that August night I have improved so much but I know there is more left. CrossFit has changed my life and doors opened that wouldn’t have opened if I never set foot inside of CrossFit Goldsboro. Because of CrossFit I have learned to always seize every opportunity that I come upon.

When the opportunity came about to begin coaching, I knew I couldn’t pass it up and haven’t looked back since. The experiences couldn’t be paralleled anywhere else, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

I was first introduced to CrossFit by my now training partner Mike Garrett early in December of 2011. Everything since then has been history. I did my internship through CrossFit Mount Olive and have since then been a trainer. I enjoy training others and love seeing the results that occur from the high intensity training that each athlete we train goes through. The gym and its community are unlike any other!

It’s hard to believe it has been nearly two years since I walked into the Crossfit gym in Mt. Olive. Truth be told, I didn’t really want to be there that day. I was suppose to be touring training facilities with a group of people from the high school I work at. One of the people in the group suggested that we stop by CFMO. I didn’t know much about Crossfit other than what he had told me and I didn’t think it was what we were looking for. Little did I know that my views on fitness and training were about to change that day.

I have always had a sports and fitness back ground. Growing up I played sports year round. In high school and college I loved working out. Currently I teach physical education / weightlifting and coach football and track at a local high school. Fitness is not something that was new to me prior to two years ago. In the beginning my main goal was to be able to eat how I wanted without gaining weight. I attended CFMO on and off for about year and a half. I also got in WOD’s at my buddy Ben’s house. It was hard to get WOD’s in at times with a busy coaching and teaching schedule. Last year I took three months off during football season. I can still remember my first WOD back, 50 thruster and 60% of your one rep max. What stands out in my mind the most was the crap show that I put on. This past summer after the gym tour I decided I was going to make Crossfit a priority. I went and talked to Mike about some new goals. Most of my new goals were the same as everyone else’s, improve my WOD times and get stronger. Also, in the back of my mind I had one major goal, not to put on another crap show at the end of this year’s football season. Around that same time I had the opportunity to start coaching at the gym.

One of the best parts of the last six months has been monitoring my improvements, both mentally and physically. Through training with Mike and Joey my knowledge on techniques and programming has been greatly enhanced. I am a better teacher and coach because of the time I have spent learning from them.  The programming has helped improve my overall fitness levels tremendously. In six months my total maxes have increased at least 125 pounds. My WOD times continue to drop.  It’s not only my numbers that I am impressed by, every time you walk into CFMO or CFG some else is talking about a new PR. It’s great, our programming gets results. Training with Mike and Joey has been awesome.

Our programming is not what impresses me the most though. It’s our people and our mindset. Every time you walk into our gym you see people with smiling faces that are ready to attack a WOD with you. The no quit mentality is contagious. Everyone gets through it together and becomes better because of it. Crossfit builds mental toughness. CFMO and CFG has always been my two or three hour mental release for the day.

On a side note, I’ve come a long ways since the crap show I put on at the end of last year’s football season.  One month after the completion of this football season I competed in the Cold War 2. On the way to the competition everyone was asked what their first Crossfit WOD was. I honestly can not remember, but I do remember the crap show. It continues to motivate me to do better. The Cold War 2 was a great experience with great teammates.

It’s been an incredible two years at CFMO and CFG. I have enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. It hard to say thank you to everyone but I do want to take a moment and name a few. Thanks Chris, Mike, Brooks, Joey and Ben. Without you guys I would not be where I am with Crossfit today. Last, thanks Vann for forcing me into CFMO that day!

After weeks of being pestered by Mike and Chris while working on campus at UMO, I finally signed up for my CrossFit intro class. I’m generally hard-headed, but I’m so glad that I let go of my resolve that day. I’ve tested my own fitness, developed my knowledge of training, and become part of an amazing community of like-minded individuals. I was given the opportunity to share my passion for training when I started my internship here in January 2017. This year, I also graduated with B.S. in Exercise Science as well as earned my USAW certification. I could not have wished for a better place to work during school as well as begin my career after graduation.

Long, lanky, unfit, weak, mobile Phenom, and master of the 20 second long Burpee . These are all things that describe me when I began my internship under Cross-fit Goldsboro. While I am still many of those things, thanks to Crossfit Goldsboro I am a little less of each, and I can even do a Burpee in less than 5 seconds.

In all seriousness I came to a little university in Mount Olive finally figuring out what I want to do with my life, get a degree in exercise science and go on to help people improve quality of life by making them more fit, more mobile and overall more healthy. I studied day in and day out learning the in’s and outs of exercise science and what makes for a healthier individual and a better athlete. My first semester I had a class with Mike Garrett and it seemed like every day after class he was open to taking any questions I had and I soaked up every bit of information I could possibly could. I came to learn that Mike workouts at the local Cross-fit gym and I figured the opportunity was too good to pass up so I applied for internship in January 2014 and I quickly realized that I was right where I wanted to be. Since then I have never stopped learning whether it be improving someone’s quality of life through mobility and recovery or helping to improve others technique’s and skills!

Greg Glassman and Coach Mike Garrett

I started doing CrossFit in 2007, following a conversation and a workout with my brother-in-law who had been training with the Navy SEALs. This was my first exposure to CrossFit, and looking back now, I had no idea how this conversation would positively impact my life and the lives of many people around me. After getting CrossFit Level 1 Certified and trying the workouts, I was hooked. So much so that I knew I wanted to help work at a CrossFit affiliate and share my knowledge and experience. Now my passion in life is to share my enthusiasm for a healthy and fulfilling life with as many people as possible!
